Southern Softies Rock!

Top Tips for Bouldering on Southern Sandstone

Don'ts:

  • Climb on wet or damp rock.
  • Climb on damaged rock.
  • Brushes.
  • Tic-marks.
  • guardening (removing vegitation).
  • climbing unpermitted areas.

Do's:

  • Clean your shoes before each climb! (a carpet it best)
  • Use a bouldering matt to prevent ground erosion, but keep them clean too!
  • Keep chalk use to a minimum!
  • Use a towel to clean the rock.

Every Climber has a responsibility to carefully manage their impact on the rock to prevent increased levels of erosion.

A sandy crash pad will not clean your shoes!

Respect the Rock

Southern Sandstone is a particularly soft rock and those who climb here must abide by the Code of Practice to ensure they have a minimal effect to the rock.

It’s important that you educate yourself about Southern Sandstone and you must have an understanding of the Code of Practice before going climbing.

Here are some the guideline highlighted in the Code of Practice:

  • Use a static climbing and belay rope. Slings come in handy too.
  • Make sure your karabiner is set over the edge.
  • Make sure no moving rope is in contact with the rock.
  • Clean your shoes before you climb
  • Reduce your chalk use to a minimum
  • Do not climb on wet rock
  • Do not use brushes
  • Strictly no abseiling or lowering off
